Exchange rates move whether or not you are watching them. This gave Monese customers a way to be told when their rate arrived, rather than having to keep checking.

Problem

Good rates came and went unnoticed

Customers were missing out on good rates that would have got them more value when sending money abroad. Catching one meant opening the app and checking, repeatedly, on the chance that the rate had moved.

Objective

Let customers set an alert for the rate they want

Create a price alert feature that lets customers set FX rate alerts for the currencies that matter to them.

Tasks

How the project ran

Wireframing
UI exploration
Prototyping
Usability testing
Solution

Set it from where the rate already is

Setting an alert

One tap from the rate you are looking at

The alert is set from the exchange rates screen, where customers are already looking at a rate. Rather than sending them somewhere else to configure it, a sheet slides up over the screen they are on, carrying the same currency pair across.

The target rate is set on a dial rather than typed. The current rate sits directly above it, so the customer is always choosing relative to where the market is now.

The sheet keeps the exchange rates screen visible behind it, so the alert is clearly set on the rate the customer was already viewing.
Managing alerts

Several currencies, one list

Alerts are multi-currency, so a customer can watch GBP to RON, EUR to USD, GBP to USD and GBP to INR at the same time. They all live in one list and each row can be edited or deleted with a swipe.

Outcome

No more watching the rate

A simple, friendly way for customers to set price alerts on the currencies that matter to them, so a good rate no longer depends on happening to open the app at the right moment.

12.2%
More international payments sent
Alerts brought customers back at the moment they were most likely to send.
18%
More time spent in app
Watching a rate became something the app did and customers returned to act on it.

Khayam is an excellent designer who’s talent and professional skills make him a credit to the team. His forethought, attention to detail and consideration for edge cases make him a pleasure to work with. He always works with consideration for the technical side of how his designs would be implemented and was able to quickly answer any questions I might have in this regard.
