Customers sending money abroad had no way of knowing whether Monese was giving them a good deal. This is the chart that told them, even when the answer was no.

Problem

Customers had to leave to find out if we were competitive

Customers could not tell how well Monese compared to other services when they were sending money globally. The information simply was not there.

So they went looking for it elsewhere. That often ended with the payment being made somewhere else, or not at all. We wanted to show customers how competitive we were in the FX market without them having to go and check.

Testing

Do the arrows earn their place?

After taking the lo-fi designs into hi-fidelity, we tested two variations of the chart with a very small difference between them.

The variant on the left used an arrow against each price to show whether it was higher or lower than Monese. The variant on the right used no icons at all, just the numbers. Everything else was identical, so anything we learned could only be about the arrows.

Two variants of the comparison chart side by side, labelled Test A with arrow UI and Test B without arrow UI, each listing the same six providers and prices
The only difference between the two is the small arrow against each price.
Insights

What came back

5/5 found the information useful
Every participant valued seeing the comparison at all.
5/5 found the best price easily
Picking out the cheapest service was not the hard part.
4/5 found the chart easy to reach
Navigating to the comparison was mostly clear.
4/5 struggled without the arrows
Participants said they had to do more reading to work out whether a price was higher or lower than Monese. The arrows let them understand the pricing landscape at a glance.

That last one settled it. Without the arrows the chart still holds all the same information, it just makes the customer do the work of comparing. The arrows shipped.

Solution

Honest about pricing, including when we lose

The chart sits behind the FX calculator, one tap from where a customer is already entering an amount. When Monese has the best price it sits at the top of the list, marked as the best price.

When Monese does not have the best price, the chart says so. The competitor that wins goes at the top and the copy is straightforward about it. That was the harder decision and the one that makes the feature worth trusting: a comparison chart that only ever flatters you is not a comparison chart.

The final flow in four annotated screens: the payments screen, the FX calculator, the comparison chart when Monese has the best price and the comparison chart when a competitor is cheaper
Four screens, from the entry point to both outcomes. The last one is the chart admitting a competitor is cheaper.
Two phones showing the comparison chart, one where Monese is the best price and one where a competitor is cheaper
Outcome

Customers stopped leaving to compare

A price comparison chart that shows how Monese stacks up against other FX services and an honest, transparent feature that shows when Monese does and does not offer the best price.

3.9%
More international payments sent
Customers who could see the comparison went on to send more payments.
2.4%
More repeat payments
They came back, which matters more than the first payment.
5.1%
More time spent in app
The work customers used to do on other sites moved into the product.

Testimonials

I had the opportunity to work with Khayam for in his role on the Monese payments team. During which time, he proved to be a strong asset to the team, and I recommend him forward for a senior or lead design position. Khayams strengths were demonstrated to me through his ability to use his passion and energy to drive problems forward each day, and reach a well thought out, well crafted solution. Khayam is an excellent designer who’s talent and professional skills make him a credit to the team. His forethought, attention to detail and consideration for edge cases make him a pleasure to work with. He always works with consideration for the technical side of how his designs would be implemented and was able to quickly answer any questions I might have in this regard. His communication skills are great and he is always able to explain his thought process behind a decision. I really enjoyed working with Khayam and would recommend him a designer who would deliver fantastic value to any team.
